Re: Powder thingy

Great work and some nice machining. Funny how timely this project is as I was pulling my Harrell apart yesterday to start measuring. I'm initially going to make a scaled down culver measure to fit my existing Harrell (I currently have the BR model) as I want it to be able to throw small charges like...

What did you do with the original barrel?

Good outcome there though.

Re: Rust Bluing - DIY Steam Pipe apparatus / Damp Cabinet

How well does the steam bath convert the brown to black? I'm curious, as I normally boil the barrel etc in a long tank with distilled water but it can be a pain to have enough distilled water on hand. I've found the depth of brown to black conversion varies with water quality sometimes. I'm also car...

Re: HW 55 T

Nice looking T. I know a bloke from Tassie who walked into Canberra gun shop and bought one a few years ago. Lucky bugger. I still have it Mr. D. One of my favourite rifles to shoot. The Tyro stocks are just magnificent to shoot. I'll try and drag up a few pictures, but its not in the class of the ...

Re: Custom steel stock

"If I'm gonna shoot a rifle off the bench for 200 rds a day, I want it to be heavy enough to soak up all the recoil and not have any muzzle jump." It's in 17 Fireball. That must really be punishing his shoulder shooting 200rds a day! It's almost cruel to shoot furry critters with so...

Outstanding wood on that rifle! Just wow.

Mine has nice wood but not in that league. Good score!

Re: 7-08 or 308?

What loads are you using for the 6.5x55 and what pills? Any idea of speed they are going and where are the hits on the rams? If you have a Tikka then you'll have a fast twist barrel so it will stabilise the heavier pills, and also contrary to initial thoughts, sometimes you are actually better off h...

Pretty wise choice in my mind. The Ackley is barely worth the bother. 7-08 works just fine on its own.

Re: Mag Feeding 7-08AI

I've got a push feed Winchester Model 70 long action in 7mm-08 Ackley. It will feed from the internal, blind box magazine if they are stacked correctly and positioned right at the back of the magazine. It also feeds from the wooden stock with the 2 piece hinged floor plate, which shouldn't be any di...

Re: Thinking about a 177

Well that cut the field down a lot! You can go 2 ways on guns based on sub 12FPE a .177 Springer (Recoiling class) or an upmarket PCP sub 12 FPE target rifle, kitted out for FT. The top PCP .177 target guns velocities are usually factory set at 550fps -650fps with 7- 8.5 grain slugs. (Roughly 5-6 F...

Re: Productive arvo

Do today my dasher resize reamer finally arrived from ptg straight down the shed to start making my new full length bushing die. Found a piece of 4140 and got to it. More photos come come once it's done. Yep. I reckon that's what he means about a resize reamer. I have to get on the lathe soon to ma...

Re: colour case hardening?

It's weird timber actually. Its nice to work with, especially on the lathe as it turns to a highly polished finish straight off the tool. Very little sanding needed. Its only on a 22lr so no real recoil issues, have no idea how it would hold up on a gun with recoil - probably not great. Regarding st...

Re: colour case hardening?

I've done a little genuine case hardening, but not with chemicals. For my own stuff I actually made my own bone and hardwood charcoal, my own heat treat oven etc and did it the old fashion way. As you are aware (hence the request for a chemical method) with modern steels you have to give some cautio...

Re: New Toy 20 PPC

I've found the reach around to the trigger a problem with these types of thumbhole stocks. Stumpy fingers here too, but I've never found one of these stock styles to work for me. Give me a nice vertical pistol grip and happy days. I've got a Finnfire Range that is just awesome. I'd get one of those ...
