Personally, the 'legend' needs to be put into perspective. Actions are investment cast, some dislike that aspect. Angled front action screw is a pain to bed. Barrels could be hit and miss due to being contracted out. Nice triggers, often excellent wood under the stain. Ruger re-introduced the 220Swift, Remington was running their commercialised 22/250Rem, Winchester was promoting it's Swift replacement the 225Winchester.

I think Ruger read the market better, but a Remington of that era was a better shooter on the whole. The Savage single shot 110s in 220Swift also had a legendary status, which makes me believe it was the cartridge as much as the rifles. Though the Ruger I think was the prettiest stocked rifle of that era.
