G,day All
Can anyone tell me something about the 20 Duster? I came across a reference to it in a reamer catalogue. Just wonderin what its based on and case capacities etc.
Cheers Jethro.
.20 Duster ???
It's loosely based on the .222, with a like capacity, if I remember correctly. http://www.saubier.com has a forum where the originator posts, I think. It's a lot like a VarTarg Turbo (VTT), only some minor changes.
Thanks Glen
I'll do a search over on Sabier and see what's what. Iver been readin a bit about varminting in the USA. Geez you guys are lucky, those PDogs, Chucks and G.hogs must be dumb crits to be able to get 300 shots off in a days shooting. The only thing we've got around here is Rabbits and they disappear down the burrow at the first or second shot. ( I would post a couple of pics of a big warren in my area but cant get them to work) then you have to wait 15 or 20 minutes . Loud noises, like the blast of a 6mmrem, frighten S--T out of em. even at 300metres. Likewise when their mates explode beside em. What are the basic habits of PDs etc under fire? Probably a new post for this one.
Cheers Jethro.

Older prairie dogs WILL go down into the burrows if they've been shot at much, which is why a lot of us like quieter rimfires like the .17 HMR. Young PDs are dumb, and they will often sit there while their littermates explode beside them. Larger stuff, like the .22/250s put them ALL into their holes quickly, but hunger and curiousity will bring them back out soon enough. Still, most shooting of PDs nowadays starts at 200 yards, which is considered safe distance for most PDs (it ISN'T ) That's a comfort zone for most.
PD pups are a story into themselves, the litters are from 5-7 generally, and I've seen up to eleven on one mound, all at once, which is why doubles, triples and quads aren't too uncommon (killing more than one with one shot) We love pups
I generally start off with the HMR, then switch to centerfires when the nearer dogs go into their burrows. When those farther dogs go down, I switch back to the rimfires and wait them out. I can generally keep two or three barrels cooling at one time that way. I usually take the HMR, a .221, two .204s and two .223s, that keeps me busy, and the dogs die pretty well. I used to use .22/250s, but they are too hard on barrels for much sustained shooting.

Glenn, that sort of shooting would be S---t Hot.
When my young bloke and myself go out varmint / rarebit busting we take a rimfire 22 and a centrefire 6mmrem. Young rarebits behave about the same as young PDs although not as many out of the burrow and they tend to lay close to the ground not offering much of a target. The older ones generally sit up a bit, but usually one shot and they are on high alert, 2nd shot and they're gone. I try to get back from the warren as far as possible to disapate the noise ( whilst still being able to spot em through 8 or 12 power binos) but in the area we shoot I have to be careful of over the horizon shots as we are on top of a hill and the surrounding area is reasonably heavily populated. This is the reason I have been thinking about building a 20 cal rifle, good range and trajectory and relitively quiet muzzle report.(I wish suppressors were legal here) Any wildcat on the 222rem 223rem case would fit the bill I think, as brass is easy to get. Only thing that stops me from going to a 20 practical or 20 tactical is the longer cartridge OAL on the same length action. I think a blown out 222rem with 40 to 50gn pills (if the 50s become available in aus) would be ideal.
cheers Jethro
I'd love to go shootin PDs in USA.(one day perhaps)
