Switchbarrel rig finally finished

Post by Brad Y »

Friday arvo I got to pick up my 22BR switchbarrel that Ive built on my howa action. The old 1:10 twist 22BRx barrel has been shortened from 27" to 23" so its a lot more useable on the back of a crowded vehicle. It screws into the action when its sitting in the custom slee L/H thumbhole, and uses the original factory bottom metal/floorplate mag system for hunting.

Screw that barrel out and screw in a 30" 1:7 twist trueflight and the action goes into a target stock made by albow. I get to run this barrel in tomorrow arvo with ten rounds to fireform the brass, then I will load those cases and work my loads with either 90gr bergers or 90gr SMK's.

Im using a davison barrel vice and a custom made action wrench to change my barrels over. Scope will stay the same, just a few clicks up and down to change for each barrel.

Well done Brad, hope the new barrel is a shooter.

So one barrel is 22BRx and the other is a 22BR?

Any chance of some pictures of the action wrench?

Cheers

When I say "custom" its really only a steel bar that has been ground down to fit  Will take a pic tomorrow. I just slide it down where the bolt goes then get a crescent on the end.

Yes the target barrel is plain 22BR. We are going to see how it performs with the 90gr bullets first then see if it needs any extra horsepower. Varmints will still get the same 69gr HPBT medicine out of the 1:10 twist BRX, but maybe a whisker slower with the shorter tube. Im wondering if the trimming will see the old loads not shoot as well.

Looking good Brad,

Do you need to use Go-Nogo gauges when you switch, or just bump it up to the shoulder ?

No gauges- just screw the barrel in and it will go in as far as the shoulder. The place where we grabbed the neck turner the other day, that bloke does the same with his remmy action. One minute its a 6BRX target rifle, next minute its a 223, then a 308. One action a couple of stocks a few barrels and two bolts. He uses the same style barrel vise and same style action wrench.

Dave

Nikko targetmaster 10-50x60. I will look at upgrading it some point along the line. I really like the 6-24 weaver classic V I have- just a shame they dont make an 8-32 so I could use it for target work. I want more magnification for F class, where hunting I only sit on 12 power or so.

G'day Brad,

Very nice rifle and certainly very economical.

I contemplated a 6mm284 and 308 switch barrel combo-unfortunately just don't have the Shekels to do so.

Regards

Hi Sean

Im also planning a straight 284 win F open build, but will need a long action to do it on as the VLD bullets make the short actions basically useless. Or I could do a 308 barrel and shoot F standard, but it doesnt appeal to me as of yet.
