what for. I would buy a 308 for pigs and goats and a 30 06 for deer. 30 06 throws a 180gn pill at same speed a 308 throws a 150gn.

'06.
More power if needed, can handle heavier bullets if needed - can do all that .308 can do and more with barely any more felt recoil (bullet weights and rifle weight being similar) and ammo prices much the same really.

308, cause Ive already got one in the safe and dont think that there is enough difference in the two to get both, but thats common sense talking so who knows what will happen down the track a bit.
Re: .308 vs 30-06 ?
308Win every day of the week. Not enough of a benefit to the 30/06 to justify itself in my opinion. My 308Win can launch 220gr Sierras so the idea that a 308Win isn't good with heavy pills is a Furphy, its just 100-150fps slower as you'd expect from the lesser capacity case, and these aren't the pills you launch for long range hunting so its all good to me. A premium 150gr from the 308Win will do anything a 180gr will do from a 30/06, and if you have to launch 180gr + pills ... I'd use a 300WinMag.
My 308Win rifles are a 22" barrel for a Stevens 200 and an 18.5" Ruger RSI, from shorter barrels I prefer the smaller cartridge. If I was to get a 30/06 again I'd insist it must have a 24" barrel ... but then I've owned x5 30/06s and everyone went by the wayside for more interesting cartridges.
If I needed flatter trajectory I'd go 270Win ... and if large animals were my bread and butter I'd step up to a 300Magnum. So for me it sits in the middle in a no-man's land. If I did get back into a 30/06, I'd be feeding it exclusively 200gr AccuBonds and driving them as hard as safely possible from a 24" barrel.
Cheers...

+1 30-06 Spring. I have one, I passed up the 308. I prefer the 180gr and 200gr projectile weights.

I have had both and prefer the 308.
As has been said not a lot of difference between them but I am partial to the 308.Never had a problem with anything in oz that i have shot with a 308 including buff.

308 but only because i hate long actions as when shooting at multiple targets i feel as though the bolt is going to hit me in the face every time i reload

I shot this boar last Tuesday morning on a trip to South West Queensland. The shot was taken from 30 metres while he was feeding on a roo carcus. Hit front left shoulder exited behind the ribs on the right side. He ran 50 metres before he droped. I reckon he would weigh over 75kg.

Long live the 30-06

That's one hell of a good looking boar there Mulga.
I love the variations in colours but my yank mate only values the feral colour, the blacker the better!

Re: .308 vs 30-06 ?
Hi Mulga,
I actually got this one with a bow but I was talking about the variations in colour.
With the calibre I'd definitely go for a .308. The versatility in reloading & inherent accuracy gives it the advantage over the 30-06.
I have a Mauser 66 in .308 and it shoots like a dream (150gn Noslers). I had a Ruger No 1 in 30-06 and it was temperamental with what you fed it. I also have a heavy barrell (32" Shultz & Larson) that is deadly accurate with the 144gn army solids (I'm selling it if anyone is interested).
Cheers
