should i use larger rifle primer cases or small rifles primer cases ?
& what primers ? mag rifle or mag pistol or just std ??? probably depends on bullet weight & or powder weight .
& what projectiles are you guy's using ???? i mostly hunt goats & fallow deer but all of our medium game is on the list . i'
d like to try some of the hornady ftx 200gr , 225gr or 250gr but i'm all ears . btw how does the 45 long colt perform on game ??? thanks
ps is it fine to use 45 long colt dies on the 454 ????
anybody loading the 454 casull ???
Re: anybody loading the 454 casull ???
I have a Rossi in 454 casull and love it, haven't shot any critters with it yet, but it is a joy to carry in the paddock.i'm going to load 454 & 45 long colts for my rossi m92 . any do's or don'ts for this rifle & cartridge ?
I tried to load the 200gr lead bullet with 27 grains of AR2205 (not in any manual) and couldn't get reliable ignition, some would fire and some would just get pushed out by the primer. I found out that slow pistol powders like AR2205 need to almost fill the case or they won't ignite. http://freedomarms.com/ see tip 2 on the 454 tips page
I have a marbles tang sight on order too, the buckhorn aint much good and the elevation blade bounces around under recoil.
The Magtech factory 260 or 265 grainers, can't remember what weight, chronied 2070 from my riflei have some winchester 250gr jhp 454 ammo & will try some magtech 260gr stuff along with some milder 45 long colt 200gr jhp . i will load the cases with win 296 & not sure of what bullets yet .
I am loading the 300gr Hornady XTP mag with 30 grains of AR2205 (about 1800 fps), max load on the ADI site is 31 grains, but it was giving me dented case rims, dunno if the Hornady's are too hard though, hopefully find out soon
I have Magtech empties and starline new brass in 454 and both have small primer pockets.should i use larger rifle primer cases or small rifles primer cases ?
Use the Casull cases for Casull loads
Any small rifle primer works for me if the load is right. I tried the cci small rifle mag primer when I was having issues with the 200 grainer but it still failed due to an unfull case. From what I can gather, the small primer pocket brass is designed for a small rifle primer.& what primers ? mag rifle or mag pistol or just std ??? probably depends on bullet weight & or powder weight .

I think the ftx bullets are too longi mostly hunt goats & fallow deer but all of our medium game is on the list . i'd like to try some of the hornady ftx 200gr , 225gr or 250gr but i'm all ears .
dunno, but I use 8.8gr of AP70 and a 200gr lead bullet for cowboy silhouettebtw how does the 45 long colt perform on game ??? thanks
that's what I use for 454 in my O frame press, load the colts on the dillon progressive.ps is it fine to use 45 long colt dies on the 454 ????

Re: anybody loading the 454 casull ???
For flat knacker loads with slow powders like 2205, I would use magnum pistol primers. I just use large rifle primers in my .44M loads - they are hard to seat though.
With standard large pistol I was having ignition issues with 2205, as top loads are compressed.

Re: anybody loading the 454 casull ???
thanks guys .
well the rossi has been sent back for warranty . theres a split running along the grain in the wrist of the stock .
anyways i now have some win 250 gr jhp , speer gold dot 300gr hp , & 45 colt 225gr jsp american eagle loaded ammo to try for now .
i have heard very glowing reports about the win 250gr load but only used on foxes , cats & hares . it really makes a huge mess of those smaller things , interesting because those rounds are ment for hogs & whitetail deer .
well i just ordered lee 454 casull dies , & will be using win 296 powder . win 296 seems to give the best results from what i have found on the net . ftx bullets might feed when used in the 45 colt cases ? btw the dvd i'm buying about lapping the action says something about grinding for feeding , that might allow for slightly longer rounds ? who knows i'll post more when i know more thanks again guys .
