17gr 17Hornet Loads

Post by bimbo »

I acquired a few different 17gr 17cal projectiles during the flower picking festival to try out in the 17 Hornet and looking for some info on suitable powders and weights, didn't turn up much online with everything starting at 20gr pills.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
James

I agree. The little 17 gn is superb in the 17 hornet as well as a 20 gn. I too have found that they are more accurate if pushed fast opposed to a mild load. The 17gn can be made quite long. From memory I have made them about .500"
Looking forward to seeing your results Camel. Unquote

OK, for load data I was not to fussy. This was mainly because it just worked and I left it alone. I did find that the long for weight 17 gn shot very well and Better than the 20 gn, but if you have some wind around it can drift. For me, at night the wind is not a issue so they are my main fodder. Either way they both shot under a inch and is more than good enough for my needs. You have to remember that the longer the jacket the more the jacket will weigh and therefore less lead is required to make up the weight. The jacket is about 7 gn by itself and the core therefore 10 gn. This may lead to a unstable projectile over longer ranges but that is not a concern in my shooting.
I have some plastic tips that I will put in the nose and therefore shorten the jacket and have more lead. The plastic tip weighs approx .1 gn..
Have not got around to it yet as I am working on a batch of 1500, 20 gn.
Takes a bit of time.

10.1 gn of 2205
Federal SR primer
17 Hornady case
OAL ...what fit in the magazine

This is accurate in my rifle so please start low and work up. It is the exact same load as I use for the 20 gn pill, it just goes faster!
