Best load for .270 W

Post by Wild Dog »

My apologies if this question has been done to death, but I can't find it if it has.
My Nick Harvey book says 43gr starting load and max of 46gr, using AR2208. I'm not an experienced reloader and have read where it's desireable to have as little room left in the case as possible. With 130 grain projectile and 44gr of powder there seems to be a lot of empty space.
Is this a silly question??????????
The rifle is a Parker Hale using M98 action.
The reason I'm using AR2208 is that all my other rifles use it.

Thanks trishbob40.
I'll give that a go, obviously another 10 grains is going to fill the case better . I'm also using the 130 gr Core Lokt.
By the book your load for the .270 gets out the barrel pretty quick !!

I am running 54.5g of 2209 behind a 130g Core-Lokt in my 270 with good results.

I also use a load of 52.5g of 2209 behind a 150g Nosler Partition for the tougher stuff.

I am noobie reloader. But i am using 55.5gr of ADI AR2209 with a 130gr BT. Tried from 52gr to 54.5gr in .5gr increments before the groups closed up and continued with the increments till 56.5 but it opened the groups back up at 56gr.

Holy shit thats a pretty warm load :o Were you getting any pressure signs at 66.5g? You must have had it packed in pretty tight :D

my bad fucked fugures, new keyboard
The loads were still over the max by about 2gr but seemed to work fine.
The primers were all looking the same through out the whole process. The bolt was easy to lift the whole time.
The cases were filled to about the shoulder, not in the neck.

I was talking to a guy at the range who was using 57gr of 2209 in his, His guns throat had eroded and he was chasing the same velocity as when it was new. He was using 55gr when new and getting around 3000fps (can't remember the exact figure), he chronied it later on and was only getting 2700fps so he stoked it back up to get 3000fps.

I have found the gun seems to recoil more sharply with my loads to the factory PMC 130gr i was using.

I thought it might have been a typo mate :D I tested mine up to 57g but found that 54.5g was the sweet spot.

Well by the sounds of this the .270 does best up towards the 3000fps.
Thanks guys for the feedback, it's good to know the space in the case can be maximised and still get good accuracy.
