Wont need finger grips after the first try. :D

Looking good Camel. Going a bit quicker than the knives. :D
Try using a masonry drill sharpened for drilling the holes.

Very pretty.

How thick are they at the tang and spine?

Coming along nicely, I've had a pretty good run with those newer Nicholson files (the big green warehouse sells them) they seem to cut well and hold their edge.

You got some wood picked out for the handles?

Try a bit of cold blue on a spot. If the prep isn't as perfect as the instructions suggest the bluing will look a little aged and patchy.

Another question, how did they make those old saw blades? Perhaps an acid etch might yield an interesting pattern.
1. I don't think it would hide it either and I would just be giving it a quick bluing job and take a couple of shortcuts so it should look good, depends if I have enough bluing liquid left I spost.
2. as per 1.
3. They aren't that old really, only 15 or so years old, they came off a pruning machine similar to what you see them prune orchards and vineyards with.

Thanks Morgan, I am hoping they turn out good, will just have to wait and see. :D

The blades are 6mm thick all the way through, unlike my old cleaver which is 6mm at the end of the handle an tapers down to around 2 or 3 at the tip of the cutting edge, but it was hand forged by a cutlery company in Sydney a very long time ago of which I have no idea. :D

Thanks James, yes Nicholson files are the only ones that I will use, I reckon I wore out 5 or 6 each year when I was brush cutting from sharpening machettes, they are the only ones that stood up to the job, I used to buy them by the box, think there was 12 per box.

I have some very well seasoned mallee sticks that I have used for other knife handles and the handle on my old one is Mallee as well, will see if I have some that is long enough to make handles for these ones, other than that, I havent given it a lot of thought, could maybe make up a laminate from some of the thin bits of timber the old man gave me, again Ill have to wait and see what pop up and takes my fancy at the time. :D

Would you like me to send you some macrocarpa or blackwood for the handles?
If you pay postage I'm happy to lop you some.

If gidgee floats your boat Mark I will have a look, I did have a slab that I was given and I think it is about 12-16mm thick but if you have an idea of dimensions I'll have a look and see if i've got anything that would fit

Hmmm, by the sounds of it, that wood is still alive and growing, might make the project something like my kitchen knife set, its been going for 20 odd years now  Now if you have some nicely sawed well seasoned handle blank sized (150x50x18mm) I would take that off your hands.

Looking great Mark! Always wanted to knock out a knife. I have a commercial one with plastic/rubber grib which has crapped it self might try removing the handle and making a timber one. Cutlers rivets look simple enough to use after a quick youtube scout .

Keep the pics coming.

Got the cutlers rivets ordered last night, so they should be here this week some time, might even get one finished over the weekend.

Ryan, they are easy enough to use, big thing I have found from using the before, get everything set up before you clamp the first one together, fit them, check everything is in place, then do it over again to make sure everything is exact, it can get a bit expensive at about 1.60 per set if you stuff them up and have to pull them apart, most times you have to split the wood off the rivets and then make new scales, boy does that piss me off, done it a couple of times.
