Not a bad way to spen a Mon morning

Everything that is outdoors and not hunting or shooting. Talk about fishing, 4wd, archery, camping, motorbike riding etc etc.

Hey Vermingone,

In the image of the sounder, is the top right window the output from a Lowrance StructureScan?

If so, what do you think of the quality of the scans?

Rabz it's actually the down scan which is a combination of the side scan and sonar which produces a 3d image.

The quality is awesome..... Its digital.
I know guys in my fishing club that can throw a beer can over the side in 16-20m and show you the can on the screen. Not that I approve of that behavior.

Note in the 2nd pic you can see the ripples on the sand between the limestone rocks.
11.5m of water looking at 48.8m either side of the boat.

I used to do a bit of maritime archaeology, the gear we used wouldn't come close to that.

It was such a production - tens of thousands of dollars worth of kit, towed arrays, thermal paper, surveyors on shore plotting tracks, endless pencil lines on paper charts, hours of number crunching, sunburn, no beer....

Now a trip to Whitworths or Bias Boating a couple of hours install and bingo.

Ain't technology grand?

Believe it or not but this has already been superseded by better tech. And this tech cost me about $3-4k

Well I know 3 or 4 grand is a lot of dough, but I would say it is impressive technology for the price.

I'd love to see some of the real top end gear in action.

I've seen a little bit of what some of the Navy's Mine Hunter gear can do, at a much greater cost (and a much greater risk!)

I think the latest available is actually read/displayed in 3D and in realtime.
So with a traditional sonar/sidescan it's displaying history. Whereas this latest stuff shoots all around the boat 360' and instantly.
