.243 win

So after our foray the other night shooting 23 foxes at Eneabba I had missed a couple of sitters and John the fella I've been shooting with reckons something was amiss with my Parkerhale .243.
So his Weatherby Vanguard in .243 came off the bench and I didn't miss any after that.
Today we went to the range and tried running a tried and proven different scope.
It shot like this at 25m off the bench.



Then at 90m


So I've come to the conclusion that the barrel is UNSERVICABLE

So I'm in the market for a new barrel probably stainless 26" for sending 80gr Remington's or 87gr Hornady's into foxes.
But I'm not sure what twist would be good for this application.
Also toying with the idea of an improved chamber.
Thoughts / ideas please ?

I would probably get a 1 - 10 that will cover all weights. No experience with a 243, have never ever fired one, so cant help with any other advice. I do think your barrel is stuffed, have you had a look down it with a bore scope ? Any chance it just needs a really good scrub ?

1-8 is the cover all weights twist. With a 1-10 you get stuck around 90-95gr with long projies but it will work for some 100gr ish round nose if they still make them.

the only question i have is why such a heavy pill i have been using the 65g vmax ever since it came out

and it is devastating out to 500y and at just 33" (6.25moa) drop it is easier than you think to put one in

a fox at that range .

i run the burger 95g VLD in my 243 (1:10) for long work and it shoots good groups but at the deficit

of .081 bc but it still blows the shit out of a 3L milk carton at 900y so i'm happy

If it's a spotlighting gun 1in10 will be fine.

I have loaded for two 243's, both with 75 gr V-Max.
Works very well even at distance.

Camel yes I cleaned it out.

I've found that in my current barrel that the 80gr Remington's don't exit therefore doing a fantastic job on foxes.
Seddo so a 1-8 would be good for what I'm chasing ?
What about the improved chamber ?

Had a ripple around the middle of the projie running horizontal to the centreline

1-8 will shoot everything from a 58gr to a 115gr so it is the one twist to do them all calibre. If your going to shoot 87-95gr and less then you don't need a 8 twist.

I do like improved chambers so i'm not the best person to ask about that as it can be fairly one sided.

you have to fire form brass (it can be as easy as shooting factory)

Given you want to smash foxes i thin a nice 24-26" 10 twist barrel shooting 87's will be dynamite.

I have used the 70nbt exclusively first in a 243 and since 2006 a 6/250. Accurate and awesome terminal performance.
