As some would know I was recently made redundant - nonetheless I've since been enjoying my free time.
With the Shekels that I received from Patrick and amongst other things, I purchased a metal detector - a Garrett ATX and I intend to compliment some hunting with a bit of fossicking.
The only thing I managed to find on my first day out whilst scrounging the Beach was Big Joe Hockey - and after having asked me "if you ever find anything with those things" I responded by saying that due to his Budget I've had to resort to scrounging the Beach with a Metal Detector. He wasn't too impressed but did allow me to get my photo taken with him.
I'd really like to know if there's anyone else on the forum that does a bit of fossicking and if you've had any luck?
i havent done,but wanted too.
gold gem and treasure magazine will be your friend in times like these.
if your detector is waterproof,the edge of the water line is the place to be,and beaches after a storm is where its at.
anywhere people congregate either on grass or sand is where to go.
the closer to the water you can get,especially after rough surf,is where you are most likely to find OLD stuff.
also check out any ground where a house,shop or pub used to stand.
always good for a few trinkets....

I almost said to him "I wouldn't tell you anyway because you'd want to tax me" but he had his kids with him and I didn't want to humiliate him in front of his children. As I was walking back to the car an older bloke was going fishing and asked me if I had any luck? I told him that there's nothing on this beach but I did find Joe Hockey.
The old bloke thought that I was pulling his leg and so I pointed out Big Joe.
The old bloke then says "I'm going to have a go at him about the pensioners" and then I relayed to him what I had said to him.
It's not everyday that you find the Treasurer on the beach.

As Lonerider said, GG+T magazine will be of great help to you. On the beach you will find low tide is your friend and the waters edge back to the high tide mark is where rings tend to fall off fingers. Research where the flags are put on the beach (I know they move them depending on conditions) and that is where people will congregate. Usually coins are found where people are. Have a look where the towels are laid out on a busy day and that's where you need to be early in the morning.
Also after storms is a good time as a bit of sand gets moved off the beach.
I've also just purchased a 20 inch coil, a hard carry case and an assortment of other necessities such as a pick and shovel - I'm anticipating to get out to a few old diggings and hopefully find myself a big nugget or two.
if your going beach detecting you will have to get yourself a sand scoop.
garret make a good sturdy light weight plastic scoop.
im not sure where jack lang is now,i believe he moved from greta.
hes a good bloke to talk to about all things detecting.
you do know,that you have actually opened a whole new can of worms for yourself yeah ?
old coins means collecting,identifying valuing and so forth.
gold is pretty much the same deal with heaps of research on top.
old buildings and deserted once populated ground needs lots of research.
jewelry and watches,much the same.
Numismatics is something that I have an interest in - particularly from the Roman Empire. One of my favourite coins in my collection is a very fine coin that was minted on order by Marcus Antony in honour of the Praetorian Guard that had pledged allegiance to him.
My first find with the detector was a $1.00 coin and an old Penny - albeit badly corroded and dated 1916.
If I can find a few square Penny's or perhaps a Holey Dollar or 1930 Penny I'd be very happy.
Ideally I'd like to get to Wales and the South of France (Brittany) and go through a few of the old paddocks, fields and castles.

that would be pretty kool.
i have a penny so badly worn that you can barely make it out,but its an 1800's penny.
you will never find a 30's penny,but dont take my word for it
they still find lots of roman gold in uk.that would be a pretty sweet place to peek around.
be aware that some beach's in aus are detector free zones.
