Finishing a laminated stock?

Post by bimbo »

the finish on the bottom of the fore end on my savage f class rifle is peeling up and I want to strip the finish off and give it a new coat. I am thinking as its a bit of a sage queen maybe something different (for me) and going high gloss - just to fit in with the target crowd :stir:

Do I strip off the old finish and spend hours giving it an oil and wax finish? or hit it with a 2k automotive/catalised clear?
I am thinking that an oil finish won't give as high of a gloss but would be much easier to maintain and get rid of any scratches/scuffs but a clear coat would be harder wearing but show p scratches more

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Cheers

Yeah, strip her back mate, I just used Tru-oil on my Boyds stocks, they aren't worth going to the trouble of giving them an oil finish. But if you wanted to be real flash, I spose you could give it a paint job, ask your young'uns what their favourite colours are and go from there. :D

I use this stuff, available from Bunnings, easy to apply and available in full gloss too I believe.

Ive seen a similar one made by feast Watson, also saw they have a marine one called spar which sounded like it would also be suitable. I think a auto 2k will probably give me the best finish and what i want but just not sure I could be bothered with the extra effort  See how I feel once I strip it all back

I think missed uses citrus based stripper? I haven't got that far yet but I'll probably just sand it off

Citri Strip Mark

Easy on the hands as you do the stripping

You can give a laminated stock an oil finish

Just think outside the box

Or send it up and we can do a barter
