Ned,
I believe there will be no less than 5 6mm Dashers competing. Your signature shows a 6x47 in the list - are we finally going to behold it????

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
G'Day Pat,
Well its 5/5/600 yds this weekend at Castlemaine, but usually 3/5/600 or longer maybe 3-4 yardages per day or sometimes 3x500 or 3x800etc and in F std = 12 rounds per distance or in F open = 13 per distance (usually than 50 per day unless you're in a shoot off for placings!)
In general most competitors have the following:
* A rifle capable of shooting 1moa for FS or 1/2 moa in F open
* Usually a tapered 20moa scope base with scope fitted with target turrets and an idea of come ups for the distances
* A solid bipod or front rest
* A rear sand bag
* a mat to lie on (I use a single bed lilo........I'm a cheap bastard who spends his $$$ on bullets barrels etc)
F std is a .223/69 or 80gn bullets or 308/155gn bullets. Open is any calibre but shot on a harder target face.
Remember nearly ALL of this can be borrowed by a newbie on the day if needed, there usually is someone who can loan their gear to get you started or try contacting the club to talk to the organisers about loaning equipment or what gear you plan to use prior to the event. Generally, they are fairly keen to get shooters on the firing line.
To be fair getting in earlier to ask the organisers prior to the match about having a go will help you (and them) on the day as they will be ready for you. They will be very busy with nominations, scoring, and running the event and a newbie fronting and expecting gear might be generally welcome but another distraction to the smooth running of an event.
Contact details will be on the flyer from the oz fclass site listed in my first post (as will most matches). Even fronting and having a look is worth it and make a day of it bring the family, have a look at the shoot for an hour or two, then have a look around the area; most country towns have plenty of tourist opportunities like shopping, wineries, historical buildings good eating etc.
However, I'd be very surprised if someone fronted and was refused a chance to shoot and I've seen clubs offer a club owned rifle to use (or perhaps a spare one from another competitor.....) I've seen shooters front up, and aim off the target all day with their hunting rifle and scope too.
And I'd say once you have a basic rifle/scope set up, it is a lot cheaper to shoot F class as a whole than BR but inevitablity you start to improve your equipment regardless and then the real cost starts.
Nevertheless, I've seen (and been beaten) by shooters with basic gear and better shooting and wind reading abilities too. Thats the real key to any competitive shooting, skills and wind/mirage reading all achieved by practice and as much as you can get.
LR prone shooting (benches are allowed in F class if your health does not allow you to go prone) is a heap of fun and the guys/gals are friendly and willing to help.
Time wise, is it very leisurely, 10 minutes or so to fire you rounds (I've never seen a clock though...maybe at really big matches) help score the target for other competitors after you shoot and then most of the day is spent talking about guns, accuracy, loads and stuff!!
How good is that.........
TZ, btw I've always found that joining in on the politics is usually up to the individual as to whether they want to participate or not?
Hope this helps,
Cheerio Ned

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
Well Ned, you are either very short on memory or are very forgiving. My memory is long and i am not all that forgiving. So when i think of Castlemaine, i immediately think of the clan.
I recall during the heated debate on rules, one of the clan members down there posting on that wonderful above mentioned forum, that he had a couple of shooters turn up to the shop and state that both their FS rifles were over 8.5 kg and that if the rules were written to read maximum weight 8.5 kg, then they would leave the sport. Well what should have been said is, bye bye boys we'll miss you, or more to the point, get the fucken lead out of the buttstocks that you put in there before serious rules were written or buy a lighter bipod from a supplier whos floor you are not standing on. Then there was the issue of triggers which i was directly involved in where the same clan member allowed for the user/owner adjustment of Omark triggers in FO, but would not allow those who shot FS the same courtesy. Fuck around with a 2 ounce trigger, but don't fool with a 1.5 kg trigger incase you blow the ROs head off. And then there was the bipods and then the 10 mm thick plate on the forend of FS rifles and the list goes on and on. Generally most every skermish was either started or finished by one or more members of that clan. It also happens that this clan sells drop in triggers (not a 2 ounce but), bipods, 10 mm x 3 inch wide plate for stock forends, etc etc. Then there was the Super V boycott and subsequent self removal from the above forum so, as you can see, i hold Castlemaine, or rather the clan that runs FClass in Castlemaine, in high regard and would certainly never think that there was one ounce of a vested interest in the way the rules for the whole country would be written. If they strike a plaque in their honour for services rendered, i'll cut off both index fingers to make sure i never shoot again.
So Ned, politics has fuckall to do with it. It's what i reckon was wrong or right and this thread has allowed me another opportunity to stick the knife in. And for you Fraser, when you reply, remember i see none of what you write as you have long been on my ignore list.

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
G'Day TZ,
this is the first I've heard of this, since it seems most of what you talk of occurred before I started F class just a few years ago, its only the recent super V debate I'm aware of. Oh.......and of course my question about the use of BR wind flags when I started F class; so I kinda know the form.........
Besides, I'd had enough of politics with BR in victoria back in 2003; so I avoid it like the plague. I'd rather shoot and enjoy myself and let my shooting ability talk for me, and if I'm good enough beat more fancied shooters; the happier I am!
I guess that's why I like FO

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
Ok
Will look at it
No way I will be able to go prone at all. With my stomach operations etc- theres no way in the world I would be even considering prone.
Is it an exposed firing line?? ie under the sun??
So how welcome would a newbie be if he turns up already disabled and needing to shoot off a bench first up??
TZ most people take one look at me an run the other way- not likely I'll be involved in political or otherwise conversation- but thanks for the warning
There is a reason I'm named Ogre and I'm only getting worse..........
The 6BR is a possible for upto 500Y as I was peppering the Ram at little river today with the 65 V-max load-
Couldn't tell if I was hitting the Ram much as the guy next to me was shooting a 30/378 WBY and there was no target hit sounds coming in over that noise
But for any further I'm not sure what to use- My 6 BR is a 1:10 twist barrel so it wont use the 105's or similar-
What target projectile options are there in the 85-95 weight range in 6mm??
My 223 is a 1:12 twist- so no 69's for that
My 30 BR is a 1:12 twist-- it might work with some 155's or something but ?????
My 6.5x55 is being re-built so I cannot use that
What is involved with scoreing others targets?? How heavy are the frames etc as I'm useless as tits on bull for lifting anything?
Is there another task I could do instead??
thanks

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
G'day Pat,
I'm afraid it is an exposed firing line out in the sun.
i'd say call the Club captain Chris Jolme 5474 2552 to discuss any issues you may have. I have seen a bench in use up there that they shoot of, but I dont know who owns it, but I expect it would be available for general use.
Scoring involves observing the indicated score from the target crew and recording it on the firing line with a check scorer. No target pulling as a crew is provided.
If in doubt, come on up and see how its done before deciding on whether to shoot or not
As for the 6BR use a 90-95gn bullet from berger or Sierra and you will be competitive out to 600yds
hope this helps

Re: Vic Shooters - F class/Full Bore @ Castlemaine
Just realised I have what looks like a Davies F-class rest in the garage
Will have to get a rail fitted to the fore-end one of my stocks to be able to use it
or will I be able to use a BR front rest and rear bag?

ogre,
Yes you can use a benchrest and rear bag in F class, so dont worry about havung a rail fitted just yet.
I would use the 6BR with either 90 grn Lapua Scenars or Berger VLD's, Pro Cal stock both.
cheers

I will be there to have a look for sure, will bring the .223 but doubt if it would be any use shooting 45gn jhp's at that distance without some serious coaching on holdover.
