Rapid rabbit

Post by Whitey »

Packed the gear into the car and the little bloke and we headed for Tenterfield. There always seems to be so much gear when you have the A/R bug. This gun for this, that gun for that but all worth it. Trip was fairly uneventful. The usual semi's tailgaiting and bully the tintops.

The wheather was great. No wind, rain or clouds. 10 at night and a very pleasent 25 through the day. Anyway I cracked out the Rapid Mk1 .22, a quick fill and away (no removing the bottle anymore). The rabbits weren't exactly plentiful but managed to put away a few. Had hoped for a cat or maybe a fox, but to no avail.

Next day a trip up the mountain was planned. Chain saw fueled and in the back, to clear the regular tree falls across the track. Takes some serious 4x4ing to get up there but good fun and some of the best views around. Scoped out several groups of goats for a young buck to put in the freezer. As usual I procrastinated over which one and kept thinking a better one might be over the next rise, and of course when I got serious, they had done the bunk. Next time.

On the way down the back of the mountain, something moved in the bracken up ahead that just didn't seem right. Got out and moved through the chest high braken. All of a sudden, several pigs took off a matter of metres away. All I could see was the bracken moving, then stop. Then away again. I waited for them to come out the edge of the bracken, swung the 308 around as a good boar appeared, and bang the setting sun right in my eyes. That was the last of him. I'll be back for them.

A few more runs and a bit of plinking with the little bloke and all too soon it was time to head home after a great few days in the country.
