Newby the air rifles What the best you can get in Australia

Hey All

This is a new one for me

Im after a good Air rifle that will take down most things in my way Fox, Rabbit , fallow Deer ect

Any Thoughts ?

I don't believe it's legal to hunt deer with an AR, as Fen said, not in Vic anyway. My suggestion would be the Fx Boss in 30 cal. You are going to experience 2 issues.

1. Availability and limited range of pellets beyond the 22 cal at shops.
2. New big bore PCPs are going to be Loud ............. and expensive.
3. OK. Just thought of this one. Shooting range out to approx 80m head shots.
4. And another. Low shots per fill. You'll probably spend more time filling than shooting.

Might as well get a 17hmr. The price difference between a secondhand CZ452 Varmint and an Fx Boss alone will see you buying in the order of 4500 rounds of Hornady Vmax, give or take a couple of hundreds depending on your shop. Plus another $650+ or so for filling equipment, another 1500+ rounds. Noise difference, negligible. But when the 17hmr hits a fox or rabbit, it produces a beautiful plopping sound. Shot buns out to 180m.

So your suggesting he buy a 17 HMR for deer?

How about a air pipe springer or pcp for rabbits/foxes (if shot in right place) and a proper bang stick/s for the other stuff.
Actually .177 springer, .22 rimfire and a 243 or similar centrefire.
How's that for calibre creep?

Oops. Didn't deal with the deer. 270 me thinks but have actually seen it done with 22 HVHP at close range.

I'd actually replace the 22LR for the Boss if AR wasn't a high priority, and the OP would get even more rounds with the $$ , closer to 20,000 - 25,000. Very much depends on shooting range and ammo type.

Crush, forgot to say that you should take everything you see on the internet regarding AR from overseas with a bucket of salt. What we get here in the way of air rifles have had the shitters modified out of them to comply with Oz custom's requirements.

A friend of mine has a FX Boss in .30 cal, noisey yes expensise on pellets and air hungry about the same power as a 22 rim fire would he swap it for a 22 rim fire? NO not a chance but I don't think that he would take it on a deer hunt.
I know Fallow aren't very smart under a light but still wouldn't shoot one with an air rifle, not that I am condoning shooting deer under light.

Yep, that's a big ask. You would honestly be better off with a 22lr, both for purchase price and ammo.

But if you are set on a PCP, I reckon you'll need a .25 to have any chance of what you are after at 75m.

Not sure about these....... never seen one in the flesh.

Keep in mind that you are up for an air bottle on top of this, plus pellets at about $10 per tin of 100.

Back to the good old 17 hmr would be my recommendation. You'll need $3,000 in your pocket to start talking good quality PCPs. Plenty of quality secondhand hmrs with scope in your price range. And they have a proven track record for bunnies and foxes out to 180m, for me anyway.

Steer clear of the website that Curan suggested. Realiability and after sales service isn't their strong point. A mate of mine is still waiting for the goods he paid for 4 months ago.

Out of curiousity. Why do you particularly want a PCP for your task and have you used a 'modern' air rifle before? Is your decision based on reviews you have seen on the internet?

I did see on youtube a guy taking a deer with a Benjamin Bulldog , in the states its legal to use on white tail deer.

I have a .308 I use all the time on deer anyway.
