Hey guys,
Ever had one of those brainiac moments where an idea comes to mind that you just have to try. Mine wasn't overly serious, I just thought that I would give the open sights a run on the Gamo CFX. I took the scope off and went for a short drive to some state forest not to far from here and thought I'll sight it in for about 20 meters. Large target, no worries.
It grouped consistantly enough for me to be satisfied so I then put up a post-it note, being the approximate size of a starling, mynor or rabbit skull and when I lined up I realised just how bloody hard it is for me to shoot small targets with open sights now. Mind you the Gamo sights are pretty nasty and very chunky. I managed to hit the post-it note a few times out of five shots, but very eratically. It just seemed that when I lined up, the target was engulfed by the sights. To counter act this I set the sight slighty higher and aimed at the base of the paper. This seemed to work well, but after all the stuffing around I came home with the thought to put the scope back on.
I think that sometimes I take things a little too much for granted. That was my lesson for the day. Today I'll re-mount the scope and return to sight it in again.
Happy hunting,
Pete.
seemed like a good idea at the time :?
G'day Karve
How are ya ?
Mate i got my R9 with open sights first and tried to re-live my youth ,but back then i did not where glasses !!! try as i might ,could not get a decent group at 20 yards ,but i found a few problems my self , the stock design suits it self to scopes ,so as i lowered my head down onto the scope , i was actually sighting over the top of my glasses ,and wondering why i could not see a 12mm diameter bulls eye
Needless to say my R9 now wears a scope ,and it is not coming off

A good scope is the way to go - even for plinking it's better - more fun picking off tiny targets etc. With an airgun it's all about precision and even the best open sights are too course IMO for good shooting - especially hunting where you want to place your shot exactly where it will give a humane kill.
That was the reasoning behind it. All the air rifles I used and one that I owned as a young bloke had open sights. I am pleased to report that the scope is back on, the targets are full of holes and I am quite happy again. Still it did present an interesting challenge at the time and I discovered a very small rabbit population in the process.HAIR BEAR wrote:Mate i got my R9 with open sights first and tried to re-live my youth
All in all I have learnt a valuable lesson
