rifle build up

Post by andrewk »

since everyone is doing it i'll show mine.

the donor was a standard tikka lsa in 22-250. honestly bought it for the action but hoped the original barrel would be ok for a bit of shooting before hand. cheap price and paid for without seeing proved the barrel was farked

rifle sits in gun safe for 2 and a half years then one day i got a hold of a reasonable 308 barrel. the barrel being a varmint weight 1 in 13 inch twist 4 groove maddco. not too bad for a second handy and will work fine as a goat gun.

i had my smith turn the barrel to suit my tikka action and also turn some alloy pillars for me too. i took the un-finished metal work home for bedding and fitting the barrel into the stock.

this stock i had nearly broken while experimenting bedding actions. let me tell you when you know nothing about it and you think it can't be that hard to do.... well it isn't really but it's piss easy to glue an action into a stock. anyway a piece of broom handle and sandpaper to open up the barrel channel and time for glueing pillars and bedding. my smith milled the stock so the pillars fitted into where they needed be and the rest was a bedding job. this being my second proper bedding job i must say wasn't as good as the first but it's close. will have to wait and see how it shoots.

so that done, painting was required. my back ground as spraypainter in the auto collision repair industry makes this easy. me no longer being in that trade and painting camoflouge on m113 apc's has given me new skill. ok this is a hunting rifle, camo paint job. i've played abit with camo'ing and i have painted a bow for a friend before. got fancy about it and it came out pretty to say the least but learning what sort of camo works best at concealing, a large break up pattern is all i needed to do.

so here's the result so far.

will post the finish rifle and first groups soon i hope.

well the checkering started to look really shit so what i did and we do it to the top of the army vehicles is grit the areas you grip on. so i masked off the checkering and applied a wet coat of paint, sprinkled appropriate sized blasting grit on it and painted over that.

Looks like its Tikka M55 action build up time. Two in a week!

Well done mate, that looks sexy. If you ever want another stock, try Geoff Slee- he did a great job on a varmint style tikka stock for mine.

An NXS will be cheaper in Australia than the U.S.

how do you figure that? everyone i've talked to about nf scopes reckon that they are never to be as cheap again and rumble something about importing and what we pay compared to US customers.

Andrew I havent tried to get a Nightforce from the states so this may stink as I could very well be talking out my arse but if it is from a dealer most wont ship as it has something to do with the reticle :roll:being a type of mildot setup (not sure on this) and they fall into the dangerous goods or some shit like that.
You will most likely have to pay tax on it this end as the $$$ amount will be over the threshhold and the suppliers usually wont put a dodgy figure down for you to reduce the tax you pay.
